Yes, The ‘Fresh Prince’ Theme Song Is Even Better When It Involves The Roots
Will Smith is a blockbuster legend, a television icon, and a Cool Dad. But on Thursday night, he reminded America that at his very core, he is a musician. Granted he hasn’t released an album in thirteen very long years, and most of his performance on The Tonight Show was “The History of Television Theme Songs,” but he’s a music legend nonetheless. Why? Because Will Smith finished by recreating the Fresh Prince theme to push us into the weekend.
During his appearance on Thursday, Jimmy Fallon recommended he and Smith recreate the best of television themes, so they started with “Thank You for Being a Friend” from The Golden Girls, and made their way through The Jeffersons, Diff’rent Strokes, Good Times, The Andy Griffith Show, I Dream of Jeannie, The Greatest American Hero, Martin, Full House, and Three’s Company. But the big show? Well, that’s Fresh Prince.
Smith and Fallon moved into the audience as The Roots played the opening bars, and from there, everyone in attendance lost their minds. The show themes ranged all the way back to the 60s, meaning there were definitely some kids out there a little confused as Smith and Fallon danced around to Jeannie, but it’s mostly just a reminder that we’re way overdue for some new music from the real Fresh Prince.
Or at least more of this on Instagram.
