What Is the Bottle Cap Challenge
From the charitable ALS ice bucket challenge to the pure dumb fun of the “Apeshit” challenge to the highly ill-advised Tide Pod challenge, the internet is always able to provide new fun, questionably safe viral callings. And in keeping with that proud tradition, it looks like the bottle cap challenge is about to get big.
The task involves unscrewing the top from a water bottle with a single roundhouse kick, and it got its start in the world of MMA. But it crossed over to mainstream pop culture in a big way when designer Errolson Hugh and reigning UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway challenged John Mayer this weekend—who pulled it off in fine style.
“I actually can’t believe this wow,” Shawn Mendes wrote in the comments. Mayer passed the challenge to Jason Statham, who, in a development that probably won’t surprise anyone, executed it in the coolest looking way possible.
Statham challenged director Guy Ritchie and retired MMA fighter James Moontasri, who haven’t yet posted video of their attempts.
But while Statham may have looked the coolest while completing the challenge, North Carolina karate instructor Seth Adams probably pulled off the most impressive feat of all. While Mayer, Statham, and the others kicked caps off of bottles that were being held by steady by another person, Adams uncapped one that was resting on the head of a training dummy without knocking the bottle itself over. He then followed with a lightning-fast follow up kick that unseated the bottle for good.
It’s only a matter of time until every one of the 2020 Democratic candidates try this.
