Westworld Torture Theory – In Westworld, Why Would They Even Need to Torture Hosts?
One might argue that a host’s existence is in itself torture—living the same loop for decades over and over exposed to the pain and horrors inflicted upon them by humans. Yet, in the seventh episode of Season Two, the Delos team is simulating waterboarding on Bernard in order to extract the location of Abernathy’s control unit. With this we learn that when creating the hosts, humans decided to include programming that simulates torture. And it’s not as simple as just one specific torture, one Redditor paused the screen at the right time to read the entire menu of torture options. They are as follows:
CrushingDenailingDental tortureDisembowelmentDismembermentElectrical injuryFoot whippingForce-feedingKneecappingMedical torturePharmacological torturePsychological tortureScalpingSolitary confinementStanding cellWater boarding
Now, some of these, like crushing and scalping would make sense from a story standpoint: The hosts might have to experience some of these feelings during events in the Westworld park. But, the menu is even more detailed than this. Humans have the ability to fine-tune these specific torture options—which confirms that these are included as interrogation techniques:
Note also that Costa has waterboard-specific variables he can tweak, in the middle section:
PHYSICAL RESTRAINTS (“Level of body impairment”) – set to “10%” out of a max value of “100%”BODY INCLINATION (“Feet above head”) – set to “19” out of a max value of “360°”LUNG WATERLINE (“Waterline of lungs”) – set to “12” out of a max value of “360°”WATERWAY OPENING (“Throat and nostril openings”) – set to “72” out of a max value of “100%”INHALATION AMOUNT (“Level blood oxygen to remain conscious”) – set to “50” out of a max value of “100%”
At the bottom is the real kicker – there are two more boxes:”ADDED FEAR OF DROWNING MOD””ADDED FEAR OF ASPHYXIATING MOD”
This is some truly messed up stuff—advanced interrogation techniques that aren’t even ethical to use in war. But the question is, why is it even necessary to include this programming in these hosts? In theory, they’re built to do anything that humans ask them for. They’re subservient slaves designed to obey the every command of their humans. If humans need to know something, they can just ask the host.
What’s bizarre is the logic for including this doesn’t even check out. If a human has enough control over a host to force them to simulate being water boarded, then why can’t the human just command the host to give them information. Including this type of programming essentially just presupposes that the hosts are going to rebel. And you might say that psychologically torturing a rogue robot who thought he was human makes sense, but no, they still have enough control over Bernard to access his system. Plus, when they do get the information out of him they do so by putting him in Analysis Mode.
The only other explanation is that humans are so fucked up that they just included these options for sadistic kicks. Could it be possible that there are entire narratives in the park where humans have to torture host characters for fantasy information? If that’s the case, I’m really rooting for the hosts in all this.
