Tom Holland on Nicki Minaj Rumors, Rihanna “Umbrella” Lip Sync Battle With Zendaya and More
Is there anything about Tom Holland that isn’t completely, head-over-heels charming? The answer is no, there isn’t. The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man absolutely smolders as our March 2021 cover star, and the allure doesn’t stop there. In the newest episode of “Explain This,” we asked the 24-year-old British actor to dive into some of his career highlights and, most importantly, what he thinks of all those memes about him on the internet.
In the video, Holland (absolutely rocking a black turtleneck, no less) reveals his reaction to those Nicki Minaj-is-having-his-baby memes and discusses his legendary Lip-Sync Battle Rihanna performance with Zendaya.
To refresh your meme memory: back in July 2020, Holland began trending on Twitter after Nicki Minaj announced she was pregnant, and fan-made memes started to circulate, claiming that Holland was the father. In the video, Holland reads one of the memes, which says: “Nicki Minaj has announced she’s expecting her first child with husband Tom Holland. Best of luck to the happy couple!” along with hilariously poorly-Photoshopped pictures of the rumored family unit.
Revealing his reaction to the meme, Holland says, “This actually really stressed me out. And then I saw it was Nicki Minaj, and then I realized I’ve never met Nicki Minaj, so that was a big relief for me. Because I’m not ready to have kids. I’m not even ready to have a dog, properly,” he says.
In the rest of the video, Holland revisits his Lip-Sync Battle performance of Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” in which he performed in drag, and absolutely killed it—though, he says, it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing for him, which he will never repeat. Watching the video of his performance, Holland says, “It was amazing that I got to do it with Zendaya, and yes, she did go there to have some fun, and yes, I did go there to destroy. But oh my God, that was easily the most stressful thing I’ve ever done in my life. I would never, I would never do that ever again.”
