The Shape of Water Wins Oscars 2018 Best Picture
Assuming that Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty read the correct name this time, The Shape of Water won Best Picture tonight at the Oscars. That’s right: The one where she fucks the fish took home the highest honor in Hollywood.
Guillermo Del Toro, who also won Best Director tonight, said in his acceptance speech: “A few weeks ago, Steven Spielberg said if you find yourself there on the podium, remember that you’re part of our legacy, our world of filmmakers, and be proud of it. I’m very very proud, I want to dedicate this to every young filmmaker.”
“I want to dedicate this to every young filmmaker, the youth who is showing us how things are done in every country of the world,” Del Toro said. “I was a kid enamored with movies growing up in Mexico, I thought this could never happen. It happens and I want to tell you everyone that is dreaming of using genre or fantasy to tell stories about things that are real in the world today, you can do it. This is a door—kick it open and come in.”
The Shape of Water won four Oscars tonight and was nominated for 13 awards. The film follows Sally Hawkins as a mute who falls for an anthropomorphized amphibian in Cold War-era Baltimore. The movie beat out Call Me by Your Name, Darkest Hour, Dunkirk, Get Out, Lady Bird, Phantom Thread, The Post, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
