‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Season 2 Release Date, News, Cast, and More
Nine episodes, one inescapable song, a lightning bolt later and The Righteous Gemstones has officially ended its first season. The freshman comedy is the latest collaboration from Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and David Gordon Green and as it turns out, HBO is pretty fond of what they’ve created. Starring McBride as the heir apparent to a corrupt televangelist family, the series’s first season managed to combine a lot of absurdism, a bit of mystery, and just a touch of morality. Oh, and in case it’s not stuck in your head already, it also gave us “Misbehavin.” And that is a gift from The Lord.
With Season One being over, that leaves the question of Season Two and where the series might go. Let’s break down everything we know.
Is There a Season Two?
Absolutely. Three weeks into the first season, HBO announced that the series would come back for a Season Two. No official word on when exactly that season will come to be, but it’s probably a safe bet to expect it to drop late next summer. With the loss of Game of Thrones and Veep, HBO is likely on the hunt for new programming to fill that void. With The Righteous Gemstones holding a steady viewership (and even some growth) toward the end of Season One, the televangelist comedy is gospel now.
Any Casting Updates?
For now, it seems that no one is in jeopardy of leaving the series. Actually, with the way that Season One comes to a conclusion, it feels likely that the roles of Keefe (Tony Cavalero) and Reverend Seasons (Dermot Mulroney) will be expanded in Season Two. Other than that, it’s likely a bit too early to make any speculation on what could come, but if we’re lucky, Season Two will continue to feature flashbacks to the Gemstone matriarch, Aimee Leigh (Jennifer Nettles). We need another “Misbehavin.”
What’s To Come Next Year?
With the series finale resolving a lot of the conflict of Season One, there’s a small chance that Season Two will continue to follow the Gemstone family on its path to redemption. Jesse finished the season estranged from his family, eventually joining his son Gideon in Haiti to do missionary work. Kelvin has reunited with his not-boyfriend-but-definitely-boyfriend, Keefe, while Judy has reunited with BJ. After a lightning strike to the head, Baby Billy has started his own tent revival service with Tiffany (and her new teeth).
Still, that leaves the mystery of who will pay for the death of Scotty/The Devil. Sure, there’s a chance that in the show about religion that the Devil’s death won’t matter all that much, but this is The Righteous Gemstones, and that Gemstone family? They can’t stay away from the devil’s temptations too long.
