“The First Purge” Trailer Shows Political Beginnings of Horror Franchise
The latest movie in The Purge franchise comes out July 4, and it tells the story of how the crazy idea to have all crime be legal for a night came to be. The trailer for The First Purge, released on Friday, features Marisa Tomei as an official who created the idea of The Purge to test human nature. It seems like she clashes with the president, who sends in military troops disguised as citizens to make sure the experiment pays off.
The movie is directed by Gerard McMurray, and written by James DeMonaco, who also created The Purge, The Purge: Anarchy, and The Purge: Election Year. Here’s how Universal Pictures describes the plot:
“Behind every tradition lies a revolution. Next Independence Day, witness the rise of our country’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness. Welcome to the movement that began as a simple experiment: The First Purge.
To push the crime rate below one percent for the rest of the year, the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) test a sociological theory that vents aggression for one night in one isolated community. But when the violence of oppressors meets the rage of the marginalized, the contagion will explode from the trial-city borders and spread across the nation.”
And in case The Purge: Election Year wasn’t political enough for you, it looks like The First Purge will also not be subtle in making references to current events. The movie’s producers also released the first poster, which features a play on the Statue of Liberty, but holding a Molotov cocktail instead of a torch.
And back in January, they released a promo image with a very Make America Great Again hat, and a political ad promoting the idea of the Purge as patriotic. Pair that with scenes from the trailer of members of “the resistance” chanting against the Purge, signs in hand, and, well, you know what you’re getting into.
