The Eternals Trailer, Plot, Cast, Spoilers, Release Date
Friends, it’s officially superhero season. After about a year without movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it feels like we hear something new from Kevin Feige’s corner of the multiverse just about every week now. We’ve been seeing kick-ass first trailers for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. We’ve wrapped up The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. Still feeling like there aren’t enough superheroes in your life? Well, Marvel just introduced a brand spankin’ new team.
On Wednesday morning, Entertainment Weekly gave us our best look yet at the franchise’s most recent A-plus-list cast—including Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Bryan Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, and Kit Harrington—who make up a legion of immortal beings called The Eternals. We already knew that the Eternals are jumping into action after watching Thanos, Ultron, and just about every batshit threat against humanity from the sidelines. But this set of new interviews with the cast reveal that there will be a love story underneath it all, focusing on the relationship between Gemma Chan’s Sersi and Richard Madden’s Ikaris. Apparently, Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman might even make it a love triangle.
“You’ve got to have this huge compassion for the human beings you’re with, but then also, you’ve got this huge disconnect from them because you’ve lived through all of this time,” Madden said. “That’s what is so good about Sersi and Ikaris together, that they are two opposing sides of how they connect with the world. That’s what balances them.”

The Eternals is based on a lesser-known comic book series from the ’70s of the same name, written by the legendary Jack Kirby. The story followed a group of godly individuals called the Eternals, who left Earth, where they were once worshipped as gods, to explore the universe. (Think: The Avengers meets The Guardians of the Galaxy meets The Crown.) The group’s antagonists are the Deviants, who are basically the Eternals, but evil. The MCU take on The Eternals will follow many of the same heroes from the comic series. Check out the official plot description from Marvel for a rundown of the heroes and their powers:
Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” welcomes an exciting new team of Super Heroes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The epic story, spanning thousands of years, features a group of immortal heroes forced out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s oldest enemy, The Deviants. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Don Lee as the powerful Gilgamesh, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, and Angelina Jolie as the fierce warrior Thena. Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman.
Got all that? Good. It seems like The Eternals will catch us up with what the group has been up to throughout, you know, all of human history, just in time for a battle against the Deviants. And save for a quick shoutout to the Avengers, The Eternals looks like one of the more self-contained stories we’ve seen in the MCU. Which might be a good thing for a fanbase that brainstorms multiverse connections after every single episode of Marvel’s Disney+ shows. That said, considering what Zhao has said about The Eternals so far, the film definitely won’t be without its surprises.
“Well, I do think, this is so boring you are going to roll your eyes, but I think Marvel, I think this film is very–I think they took a big risk with this one,” Zhao told Digital Spy. “I think they’re going to surprise you. I hope so.”
We’ll see what Marvel has in store when The Eternals hits theaters on November 5, 2021.
