Suspiria 2018 Movie Trailer – The Latest Suspiria Trailer Is the Stuff That Gives People Nightmares

It’s easy to get hyperbolic when it comes to horror movie trailers. I mean, some of them are literally too scary for YouTube! And while those of us at Esquire.com have already declared Hereditary the scariest movie of the year, I have to admit: The trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming Suspiria really creeped me out.

A remake of the 1977 film directed by Dario Argento, which film critics have hailed as one of the most inventive (and scariest) horror films of all time, Suspiria follows a young American ballerina who enrolls in a foreign dance academy. The 2018 update locates the school to cold war-era Berlin, stripping away the bright, oversaturated color palette of the original for unsettlingly austere, pale hues.

And then there’s the actual horror imagery, which we get a tease of in the trailer. As the young ballerina protagonist, played in this version by Dakota Johnson, rises in the ranks at the dance academy, she slowly learns that the women who control it (including Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton, who plays the head of the school) may have some sinister (possibly demonic?) motives. Cue the frightening score by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, punctuating quick images of torture and body horror that may very well put Darren Aronofsky’s ballet-themed Black Swan to shame.

It’s definitely a tonal shift from Guadagnino, who directed 2017’s lush and romantic Call Me by Your Name. But just as he placed audiences in the idyllic Italian country, his version of Suspiria has already shocked the very few people who have seen public screenings of its scenes.

Amazon just world premiered a scene from Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Suspiria’ remake and it’s one of the most fucked up things I’ve ever seen at #CinemaCon. People at my table turned away from the screen. All I can say is it’s beyond extreme and gross and I need to see more.

In April, footage from the film premiered at CinemaCon. According to IndieWire:

The footage shown at CinemaCon depicted Johnson’s dancing for the school’s lead professor, played by Tilda Swinton. Her movements happen to control another dancer’s movements in a separate room.According to IndieWire’s report: “[Johnson] begins to dance, but with each twist and turn, the girl in the other room is flung up against the mirrors. During her performance, the other student sustains broken bones, feels her jaw burst through her lip, and soaks the floor with drool and urine. When [Johnson] swipes her wrists across each other, the girl’s legs bend back at unnatural angles. She is in agony, reduced to a knot convulsing on the floor.”

Buckle in. Suspiria is no doubt a movie that you will never be able to forget. The film hits theaters select theaters October 26 and goes into wide release November 2.
