Star Wars Space Combat – The Last Jedi Quietly Solved Some of Star Wars’s Biggest Logic Problems
Are you ready to get incredibly nerdy with us for a second? Okay. Good, because we’re going to talk about the logic of space combat in Star Wars. Throughout the franchise, Star Wars has depicted a number of its titular battles, typically involving a number of large battleships and smaller attack fighters. But, some fans have wondered why the larger battleships need to be so close in combat, and why the smaller fighters are even needed.
But thanks to some clever and subtle dialogue in The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson tied together some of the seemingly random Star Wars tactics deployed throughout the years into a pretty logical theory about how space battle works.
YouTube creator EC Henry, has put together a video that outlines how The Last Jedi went about answering some of these questions that have bothered particularly obsessive fans for decades. Essentially, The Last Jedi makes it clear that big laser cannons on large ships are only effective in short distances, which means the smaller fighters are necessary for getting within close range.
It’s subtle and pretty genius, actually, how Johnson was able to tweak existing canon into one coherent battle strategy. Unfortunately, this doesn’t explain why General Holdo had to sacrifice herself to kamikaze the ship and not let one of the droids fly it.
