March 4th may be the only day of the year that’s also a complete sentence, but May 4th is a special holiday all its own—Star Wars Day. (Because, you know, May the fourth be with you.) Any Star Wars Day is cause for celebration among fans, but this one is bittersweet, falling just days after the death of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew.
Mayhew, who played the loyal and lovable Wookiee in all of his Star Wars cinematic appearances from the original film through 2015’s The Force Awakens, died Tuesday at the age of 74. Aside from his acting career, Mayhew established his own charitable foundation and worked with other charities like Wounded Warriers and Make a Wish. The actor stood more than 7 feet tall, and had written an anti-bullying children’s with his wife Angie called My Favorite Giant. Fans on social media memorialized Mayhew this Star Wars day, alongside another late cast member, the legendary Carrie Fisher. The Princess Leia actress died in 2016 after going into cardiac arrest during a flight from London to LA.
Though the holiday was fan-made, Disney and Lucasfilm have embraced the idea. “As Star Wars Day was created by the fans, it is truly their day,” reads a blog post on the Star Wars website. “Hosting movie marathons, sharing greetings on social media, cooking Star Wars recipes—there are no wrong ways to celebrate May the 4th, and each year we’re amazed at the creative ways that fans mark the occasion. With Star Wars alive like never before, we hope you’ll join in this year. May the 4th be with you.”
