Sopranos Movie Details – Plot, Release Date, Cast and More About Prequel Film Newark
Ever since the series ended with the infamous cut to black as Tony and the family sit down at a diner, fans have been pretty clear with their demand: More Sopranos. Now, 12 years after the show’s abrupt conclusion, David Chase is finally giving in on those demands. A Sopranos movie is coming. But, it’s not exactly what fans wanted.
After the tragic death of James Gandolfini in 2013, there couldn’t possibly be a way to show what happened to Tony Soprano after the events of the show, so this film will be a prequel to The Sopranos. And, after much speculation, the film will officially be called Newark and is due out on Sept. 25, 2020. Though details are still scarce, we know it will be set during the Newark riots of 1967 and follow Tony Soprano’s early life. Gandolfini’s 19-year-old son Michael will play the younger version of his father’s character.
“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Michael Gandolfini told Deadline earlier this year. “I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled.”
Alesandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, and John Magaro will also appear in Newark. Chase co-wrote the script with Lawrence Konner. It will be directed by Alan Taylor.
Over the course of four days between July 12 and July 17, riots—sparked by tension between the city’s African Americans and Italian Americans—resulted in 26 deaths and hundreds of injuries when it spread to the gangsters of each group.
“I was interested in Newark and life in Newark at that time,” Chase told Deadline of the plot. “I used to go to down there every Saturday night for dinner with my grandparents. But the thing that interested me most was Tony’s boyhood. I was interested in exploring that. The movie will deal with the tensions between the blacks and whites at the time, and Tony Soprano will be part of this, but as a kid.”
According to reports, along with Tony Soprano younger versions of other iconic characters will appear in the show. Nivola will play Dickie Molisanti, the late father of of Christopher Molisanti (and Carmela Soprano’s cousin), who was killed before the series.
