The Sandlot is an iconic film from the ’90s. It’s more than a baseball movie, more than a sports movie—it’s embedded into the fabric of our childhoods. And now, it appears The Sandlot will continue to live on, as it is reportedly being turned into a TV series, according to Slash/Film.
The original director David Mickey Evans recently appeared on the Rain Delay podcast to deliver the news. As Slash/Film reports, “He has sold a pitch for a television series sequel to the original movie that will bring all the original cast members back.”
While he didn’t reveal any more details, Evans did say that it has been picked up by a streaming service. It’s unclear if this is related to a Sandlot prequel, which Deadline reported last August was in development at 20th Century Fox. David Mickey Evans was also said to be working on that project. There were few details about it at the time, so it’s possible the prequel has become this project.
It seems like the TV series would be a sequel, meaning we’d be checking in with the cast—Tom Guiry as Scotty Smalls, Mike Vitar as Benny Rodriguez, Patrick Renna as “Ham” Porter, Chauncey Leopardi as “Squints,” and Marty York as “Yeah-Yeah”—as adults.
As we know from the final scene of The Sandlot, the kids grow up to be pretty successful: Yeah Yeah developed bungie Jumping; Squints married Wendy Peppercorn and had nine kids; Ham became a professional wrestler named The Great Hambino; Benny “The Jet Rodriguez” went on to play for the Dodgers. And Smalls, well, he’s a baseball announcer and still wore that stupid hat with the long brim.
