Rivers Cuomo Seems Pretty Into SNL’s Weezer Sketch
It’s a debate many fans have had: When did Weezer go from being a great band, to being, “Africa” cover aside, pretty terrible? Was it the Green Album? Or maybe Maladroit? Are you a generous soul who might argue the under-extolled virtues of songs like “Beverly Hills” or “Pork and Beans?” Maybe the band never soured, and critics just don’t understand their post-’90s output? Saturday Night Live tackled these tough questions in a sketch that found a holiday dinner party torn apart by the Great Weezer Debate—and frontman Rivers Cuomo was feeling it.
After shuffle queued up Weezer’s take on “Africa,” guests played by Leslie Jones and host Matt Damon found themselves in a rapidly-escalating argument. Damon thought the band was “doing some cool things right now,” an idea Jones found perplexing because “real Weezer fans know they haven’t had a good album since Pinkerton in ’96.”
Damon quickly took things past the point of no return when he dropped his bombshell opinion that “Pork and Beans” is better than “Buddy Holly.” Shattered wine glass shards flew and lunges were made, as is customary when debating the merits of a nostalgia act.
Weezer’s drummer, Patrick Wilson, made it clear on Twitter that he was very much Team Damon. But Cuomo posted deeply enthusiastic tweet Saturday, one that didn’t seem to suggest he had any hard feelings.
