Pusha-T Called Kanye West’s MAGA Hat ‘This Generation’s Ku Klux Hood’
It has been fascinating to watch the reaction to Kanye West’s music this summer following his radical political outburst in April. His most passionate friends, collaborators, and fans have been conflicted about his embrace of Trump and far-right ideology. Among them is Pusha T, whose Daytona was entirely produced by West.
While Kanye has been vocal about his love of Trump and his signed MAGA hat, Pusha has been clearly distancing himself from West’s politics. Even on his album, which included a verse from West, Pusha references the ongoing investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
In a new interview with the Guardian Pusha says, “The Make America Great Again hat is this generation’s Ku Klux hood. When was America so great anyways? Name that time period?”
Pusha fully admits how frustrating it’s been working with Kanye during the fallout of his Trump comments:
“We disagree on plenty of shit,” Pusha admits. “Of course I disagree with what he said then.” Was he angry? “Well, when he did TMZ, I flew to Wyoming the next day [to confront him]. We spoke about insensitivity. The actual messaging. Where I felt he went wrong. You can’t even paraphrase about situations and issues that are so personal to people. When it comes to death and real-life people and persecution and things where families have been divided, you have to be more careful.” Was he frustrated that his album release, and the other album releases to follow in GOOD Music’s summer rollout, were likely to be eclipsed by West’s comments? “It’s not about me being frustrated. He’s opinionated, I’m opinionated. He’s a guy who runs off feelings. It always comes back to the music.”
Despite West’s baffling political opinions, Pusha’s Daytona remains one of the best albums of 2018—which is impressive given that everything was working against it.
