Twenty-five years ago, nearly every celebrity in Hollywood turned up for the premiere of a big-budget movie about an alien invasion. The movie, Independence Day, opened on July 3, 1996 (though some theaters started showing the movie on July 2) and would become the highest-grossing film of the year, beating Mission: Impossible and Twister. The movie was packed with big names. It helped continue Will Smith’s transformation from a sitcom star to a big-budget action hero. It gave Bill Pullman a star turn as the president/fighter pilot. It reintroduced the world to Judd Hirsch. It provided some good Jeff Goldblum fun. And, most importantly, it was a wildly enjoyable disaster flick. The L.A. premiere, which took place on July 1, was a spectacle of famous people from the ’90s, as these photos show.
