New Wes Anderson Movie The French Dispatch Cast, Plot, and Release Date

Wes Anderson and Bill Murray are up there with John Hughes and Molly Ringwald, Alfred Hitchcock and Cary Grant, Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, and Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson as one of the greatest actor-director duos of all time. And after working together most recently on the animated Oscar-hopeful Isle of Dogs, the two are joining forces once again.

In extremely Anderson fashion, Murray will be among the stacked cast of the director’s upcoming new movie. (Murray has, of course, made an appearance in eight of Anderson’s nine full-length films.) According to a report from IndieWire, the cast for Anderson’s next live-action movie includes many of his favorites, including Murray, Frances McDormand, and Tilda Swinton, along with newcomers Benicio del Toro, Jeffrey Wright, and Timothée Chalamet. It is also rumored to star Brad Pitt, Natalie Portman, and Léa Seydoux.

The film is reportedly called The French Dispatch and “is a love letter to journalists set at an outpost of an American newspaper in 20th-century Paris and centers on three storylines,” as IndieWire reports. Anderson lives in Paris, but this would be his first movie set in the city—although the lovely short film starring Portman, Hotel Chevalier, took place in a Paris hotel.

Certainly, the plot of the upcoming film is resonate given the amount of vitriol directed at the media in America and abroad these days. And although Anderson’s films are relatively apolitical, his recent Isle of Dogs offered some fitting themes for our times. So, it’s possible Anderson could be doing something similar here—offering a film that reflects our current social and political landscape without directly wading into it.

According to IndieWire, the film could premiere at the Cannes film festival in June, which would hint at a possible theatrical release in fall of next year.
