New on Netflix August 2018

As the summer winds down, the temperatures go up—which is why we won’t judge you if you spend the dog days of summer inside basking in the cool breeze of your air conditioner and the warm glow of your screen of choice. This month, Netflix boasts a fresh slate of classic movies, new originals, and a handful of new comedy specials to keep you entertained while you avoid the late-summer heat.

Here, we give you the top movies hitting the service in August, as well as the full list of titles you’ll want to stream this month.

Warner Bros.

The Aviator (August 1)

Leonardo DiCaprio earned his second Oscar nomination—and first for Best Actor—in his starring role in Martin Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic. While his costar Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for her portrayal of screen legend Katharine Hepburn, DiCaprio’s performance of the infamously obsessive mogul remains one of his best.

Warner Bros.

Batman Begins (August 1)

While The Dark Knight completely disrupted superhero movies forever, Christopher Nolan’s first entry into his Batman trilogy certainly reignited the genre. This reboot of the DC franchise brings a real-world grittiness to the caped crusader, and boasts an all-star cast that includes Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman Katie Holmes, Liam Neeson, and Morgan Freeman.

Miramax Films

Clerks (August 1)

Kevin Smith’s directorial debut nearly earned itself an NC-17 rating for its foul language alone. While it seems tame 24 years after its release, the indie comedy that follows a bored New Jersey convenience store cashier throughout one wild and manic day remains a hilariously profane first feature—which also introduced the world to Jay and Silent Bob.

Warner Bros.

Million Dollar Baby (August 1)

Hilary Swank stars as an unlikely boxing hero who trains under a craggy coach (played by Clint Eastwood, naturally). As far as boxing films go, Million Dollar Baby hardly follows a generic formula—which is why the film earned four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (for Eastwood), Best Actress (for Swank), and Best Supporting Actor (for Morgan Freeman)

TriStar Pictures

Steel Magnolias (August 1)

This 1989 ensemble-driven dramedy (boasting the talents of Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, and Olympia Dukakis) follows a group of Southern ladies who meet regularly at a beauty parlor to gossip and express themselves. It is perhaps the quintessential American tearjerker, and it earned Julia Roberts her first Oscar nomination for her breakout performance.

Columbia Pictures

Stripes (August 1)

Bill Murray and Harold Ramis (who co-wrote the film) play a couple of buddies who seek a change in their boring lives, so they sign up for military service. Ivan Reitman’s version of the military is no doubt more light-hearted and goofy version than real life.

Miramax

No Country for Old Men (August 11)

The Coen brothers’ adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s bestselling novel is one of the best films of the 21st Century. Josh Brolin stars as a Texas hunter who stumbles upon several dead bodies in the Texas desert—and a stash of two million dollars. But soon he’s pursued by a brutal hitman (Javier Bardem, who earned an Oscar for his performance) who will stop at nothing until he gets the money.

Netflix

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (August 17)

Jenny Han’s beloved young adult novel is one of Netflix’s latest original movies. Lara Jean Song Covey (Lana Condor) is your typical lovelorn teenage girl, drafting love letters to her former crushes for her eyes only. But when the letters wind up being mailed to the former objects of her affection, her life is turned upside-down as the boys confront her about her former feelings.
