New James Bond 25 Director
It’s been a dramatic few weeks for the pre-production of James Bond 25. After abruptly losing its director, Danny Boyle, rumors spread about tension and disagreements among producers, writers, and the director about the script and casting. Once Boyle stepped aside citing creative differences, producers scrambled to find a new director for what will be Daniel Craig’s final film as Bond. With a few strong names in contention—including the first potential female director of the franchise—Bond 25 has finally found its new director.
Cary Joji Fukunaga, known for directing Season One of True Detective, will take on James Bond 25. This marks the second person of color to direct a Bond film in the franchise’s 50 years (Lee Tamahori directed 2002′s Die Another Day). It’s a good choice, given his credentials, but the delay means the film will miss its originally scheduled release date of November 9, 2019. Now, Bond 25 will begin shooting in March 2019 for a worldwide release date of February 14, 2020.
“We are delighted to be working with Cary. His versatility and innovation make him an excellent choice for our next James Bond adventure,” said producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli in a statement.
Fukunaga recently directed the critically acclaimed Netflix film Beasts of No Nation. Maybe while he’s directing Bond 25, Fukunaga can put in a good word for Idris Elba as the next 007.
