Thank you, Canada, for giving us Neil Young, a national treasure in this country. Young, who’s a wily 72 years old, just released a new music video for the song “Ohio,” which he wrote and recorded with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in 1970. The song is a slow, searing depiction of the Kent State massacre, in which Ohio National Guardsmen shot and killed four unarmed students.

“Ohio” is one of those songs firmly rooted in a time and place, yet feels incredibly relevant today. Like so much of Young’s work, it’s one of those songs that sends chills through you.
What if you knew herAnd found her dead on the groundHow can you run when you know?
It’s an intractable image of dead students, which, tragically, is one in which every American is now aware. In the new concert video for “Ohio,” Young tells the story behind how he came to write the song. As he begins to perform it, however, it becomes immediately relevant, as news clips of school shootings play over the music. The song ends with chants from students saying, “Never again.”
On his website—which looks, delightfully, like it was made in the early aughts and never updated—Young introduces the video by calling out the NRA:
“With no real laws protecting us from guns, and with politicians supporting the NRA because the NRA supports them, we are not well represented. Today’s students are brave, demanding change in violent times.
“We stand with them. They are us. We are them. This has been going on for far too long.”
He also mentions in the very next line that he made the video with his wife, Daryl Hannah, confirming reports from a couples months back that they two, who’ve dated for years, were married in a private ceremony.
