Making a Murderer Part 2 Premiere Date
Netflix reignited the true-crime TV boom with its massively popular docu-series Making a Murderer, a 10-part look at Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man who served 18 years in prison for a sexual assault and attempted murder he didn’t commit. Two years after his release in 2003, he was arrested for the murder of Teresa Halbach; Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, were found guilty of Halbach’s murder in 2007.
Making a Murderer, filmed over a course of ten years, made a case for Avery and Dassey’s innocence. The series’ popularity bolstered support for Avery and Dassey’s various appeals; while Avery remains in prison, a federal judge overturned Dassey’s conviction in 2016 after finding Dassey’s confession was coerced by police.
Netflix announced today that, just as Avery and Dassey’s stories have continued, so will its acclaimed docu-series. According to Variety, a Making a Murderer Part 2 will land on the streaming service on October 19 and will “[introduce] viewers to Kathleen Zellner, Avery’s post-conviction lawyer, as well as Dassey’s post-conviction lawyers Laura Nirider and Steven Drizin with Northwestern University’s Center on Wrongful Convictions of Youth.”
Filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos elaborated in a statement:
“Steven and Brendan, their families and their legal and investigative teams have once again graciously granted us access, giving us a window into the complex web of American criminal justice… Building on Part 1, which documented the experience of the accused, in Part 2, we have chronicled the experience of the convicted and imprisoned, two men each serving life sentences for crimes they maintain they did not commit. We are thrilled to be able to share this new phase of the journey with viewers.”
While a second part will likely focus more on the appeals process than the twists and turns of the murder case itself, audiences will no doubt want to find out what Avery and Dassey’s lives have been like after the massive success of the doc’s first season.
