Luke Bryan Explains the Anatomy of a Hit Country Song

Luke Bryan is the country equivalent of running into an old friend at a party in your home town. It doesn’t matter where you live, a big city or a small town, because the music evokes familiar scenes to which most people can relate. In a new behind-the-scenes video from the making of his new album, What Makes You Country, Bryan explains his process behind writing songs that reach people in all corners of America.

“You just want to write songs that are true and real to your life that your fans will truly relate to and believe. It’s also fun to sit in the room and put my stamp on things,” he says in the video, debuting exclusively on Esquire. “You try to up the ante, too. You try to become a better writer through all that. You just get in there, make it happen, feel the vibe, and hopefully arrive at something you’re proud of.”

In the video, Bryan explains his focus on creating songs for big outdoor concerts, which makes sense considering The Voice mentor plays some of the biggest venues in the world. His songs have to be as big as his crowds. And in this video, Bryan gives a tease of his process behind “Most People Are Good” and the title track, “What Makes You Country.” If you’re curious what, exactly, makes you country, the answer can probably be found somewhere in Bryan’s music.

What Makes You Country is due out on December 8.
