Justin Bieber Explains How He Got Out of a Dark Place
Justin Bieber is an enigma of sorts. Last year, he took a step back from music, but somehow he’s continued to make headlines throughout the year, be it for style or his seemingly whirlwind romance-to-marriage to Hailey Baldwin. But for the first time in years, Bieber (and Baldwin-Bieber) agreed to sit down with Vogue for a long-form interview to explain everything: the music, the religion, their relationship, and what’s coming next.
On what he’s been up to lately
Clearly Bieber married his wife, Hailey Baldwin, last year. But the couple had been friends for a decade, so while it may have looked like a whirlwind experience to the rest of the world, for them, it was fairly organic. They’re still planning a more elaborate wedding, but for now, there’s no kids or anything planned. Bieber has also been working on Drew House, a clothing line with his creative partner Ryan Good. And yes, you can purchase cheap hotel slippers from the site.
He opens up about why he cut the Purpose World Tour early
Ultimately, that tour came at a tumultuous time in his life. He admits that toward the end of the mega-tour he became lonely and depressed, so he made the decision to cancel the last 14 shows. He hasn’t spoken publicly about the tour cancellation or his split with music, but he sums it up succinctly when he explains stepping away from his craft for a bit:
“I’ve been successful since I was thirteen, so I didn’t really have a chance to find who I was apart from what I did. I just needed some time to evaluate myself: who I am, what I want out of my life, my relationships, who I want to be—stuff that when you’re so immersed in the music business you kind of lose sight of.”Where he stands on religion these days
Even though Bieber has been tied to Churchome and the famous Hillsong church, he finds himself a little weary to call himself a religious person, citing that he doesn’t particularly consider himself religious, but he believes the story of Jesus. He elaborates, saying, “I get sensitive when religion comes up because it’s been so hurtful to a lot of people. I don’t want to be thought of as someone who stands for any of the injustice that religion has done and does do.”
He was celibate for a year before marrying Hailey Baldwin
Admitting that he had a personal problem with sex and promiscuity, the singer did not become a “born-again virgin,” but rather instituted a period of celibacy. He had been practicing it for a year when he and Baldwin reconnected last June and continued practicing celibacy until they were married. He admits that part of the reason is that removing sex from the equation helped him to feel closer to God. He also states that he doesn’t think God puts those rules in place for rules-sake, but more as a protection from something that can hurt you.

He’s sober from Xanax after some serious abuse
In the same era that people tend to remember Bieber buying a monkey, he was also deeply abusing Xanax. He admits, “I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed.” He goes on to explain that at times, he thought security would come to check and make sure he was still breathing. His path to sobriety was without an AA-class or a sober coach, but his team seems to agree that he’s running at a good pace. He has since become sober, only drinking socially, and not using any drugs since quitting.
Bieber is as complicated as ever, but if the Vogue interview is any indication, he seems to be happier and more stable than he’s ever been before. And for someone that’s been working so regularly at a grueling pace, he deserves the break from the insanity of it all: at least as much as he can avoid it.
