Jonah Hill’s Directorial Debut Already Looks Like a Strong Awards Contender
In the ’90s, skateboarding was still a subculture with a punk attitude. This was long before the X Games, before Tony Hawk was a dad, and before skate culture had reached mainstream acceptance. Two decades later, skate culture has even invaded the highest reaches of fashion, where Jonah Hill’s love for nostalgic streetwear has become iconic for hypebeasts. Now, Hill is taking his eye for ’90s culture to his directorial debut in A24’s upcoming Mid90s, which follows a young skater growing up in LA during that decade.
Instead of the slacker attitude mostly associated with skaters of the era, Hill’s Mid90s—which he also wrote—takes the form of a coming of age dramedy. And it has a lot going for it. It comes from A24, who has been behind a number of recent critical hits such as Moonlight, Lady Bird, The Disaster Artist, The Florida Project and others. The film also co-stars Lucas Hedges from Manchester by the Sea and Lady Bird, who has become something of an Oscar darling.
In 2016, Hill said of the film, “Skateboarding’s always been put on screen as a joke or an ’80s cowabunga kind of trope, and it’s more in the tone of Kids or This Is England. Those are kind of the movies that I’m influenced by the most.”
Mid90s is due out October 19—during the peak of Oscar season.
