Jerry Seinfeld Doesn’t Think ABC Needed to Fire Roseanne Barr

This fall, Roseanne will return without Roseanne Barr as a TV show called The Conners. The popular rebooted sitcom was reworked after firing of Barr for her very racist tweet. And in a new interview, Jerry Seinfeld points out that they didn’t even need to follow her—because Roseanne had ended her own career already.

“I don’t even know why they had to do that,” Seinfeld told USA Today of ABC firing Roseanne. “It seemed like, you don’t need to murder someone that’s committing suicide. I thought the firing was overkill. She’s already dead.”

It was a surprising and swift response to Barr’s racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to former President Barack Obama.

“I never saw someone ruin their entire career with one button push. That was fresh,” he said in a separate interview with Entertainment Tonight.

When the show returns as The Conners, it’s unclear how writers will get rid of Barr’s character. But Seinfeld argues that they should have just replaced her with another actress.

“They brought Dan Conner back. He was dead, and they brought him back. So why can’t we get another Roseanne?” Seinfeld said. “There’s other funny women that could do that part. You need to get the comic in there. I hate to see a comic lose a job.”
