Jeopardy Fan Reactions to Mike Richards Exit From Hosting Duties

Now that Mike Richards is out at Jeopardy!, fans can finally lay down their torches and pitchforks.

Following a bombshell report by The Ringer’s Claire McNear, in which resurfaced episodes from Richards’ old podcast reavealed a long history of misogynist, anti-Semitic, classist, and fatphobic commentary, Richards has stepped down as the new host of Jeopardy!. In his resignation statement to the game show’s staff, Richards wrote, “It pains me that these past incidents and comments have cast such a shadow on Jeopardy! as we look to start a new chapter… I want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to Jeopardy! over the last few weeks and for the confusion and delays this is now causing. I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence.” Jeopardy! will resume its guest hosting system while Sony Pictures Television looks to replace Richards with a new choice for permanent host.

The Jeopardy! set is likely in turmoil, but over in the virtual town square, fans are dancing in the streets. Members of Jeopardy! Nation have made no secret of their dislike for Richards, whom many felt unethically leveraged his executive producer position to handpick himself for the job. Many fans expressed outrage and disappointment when Richards was announced as the permanent host, with some even threatening to swear off Jeopardy! altogether. Even celebrities chimed in, with everyone from Ava DuVernay to Oscar winning filmmaker Matthew Cherry to former Jeopardy! champ James Holzhauer sounding off. Now it’s a downright party over on Twitter. We rounded up some of the best reactions below. If you’re feeling celebratory, come on in—the water’s fine.
