Is Ser Pounce Alive On Game of Thrones? I Refuse to Believe Ser Pounce Is Dead on Game of Thrones
The general rule of thumb for Game of Thrones is that everyone you know and love will die. This goes for dragons, humans (both good and bad), and beloved pets alike. The mortality rate of direwolves in this show has been very high. So when we last saw Tommen Baratheon’s cat Ser Pounce in Season Four, it’s safe to assume—given this is Game of Thrones and all—that the cat is dead.
In the Season Four episode “Oathkeeper,” Margaery Tyrell sneaks into young Tommen’s room shortly after the death of Joffrey to gain favor with the young king before his mother can turn him against her. During their interaction, Ser Pounce jumps on the bed, and Tommen tells Margaery how Joffrey once threatened to kill the cat, chop it up, and mix its inners into Tommen’s food.
But after Tommen commits suicide at the end of Season Six, we never saw Ser Pounce again. Fans have often speculated about the fate of Ser Pounce, like they have wondered about various direwolves whom we haven’t seen in a few seasons.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner David Benioff confirmed the worst about Ser Pounce.
“Cersei hated the name ‘Ser Pounce’ so much she could not allow him to survive,” according to Benioff. “So she came up with her most diabolical [execution]. Ser Pounce’s death was so horrible we couldn’t even put it on the air.”
Okay, so that seems like pretty clear confirmation that Ser Pounce is indeed dead. But should we consider this canon if it didn’t actually appear in the show? I for one refuse to believe that Ser Pounce is dead.
Let’s first consider Ser Pounce’s role in the books. Rather than be Tommen’s old pet, Ser Pounce is one of three little kittens gifted to the young king by Margaery. In the books, Cersei knows this is a tactic used to gain favor with Tommen, but she doesn’t mind, considering she could manipulate the boy in much worse ways. And, as far as we know in the books, Ser Pounce is still alive. In fact, without Joffrey around, Ser Pounce is much safer, considering Joffrey would often torment his younger brother by murdering his pets.
So, if Ser Pounce is indeed alive in the books, can we believe Benioff’s claim that the cat is dead? As many fans have noted on Reddit, Cersei—though ruthless—might not even be the type to kill the cat. She’s someone who respects beings that reminder her of herself, people who are aloof and powerful, and have control over others. Sounds like a cat to me! It’s also worth noting that the Lannister sigil is a big cat, so one might think Cersei would have a little bit of respect for the small feline that is her last link to her lost son.
Plus, Game of Thrones proves over and over again that those who survive on Game of Thrones are ones who can play the game and manipulate others. What creature does this better than a cat? If Littlefinger can survive for seven seasons, certainly a cat can too.
Anyway, here’s to Ser Pounce ending up on the Iron Throne.
