Is Lando Calrissian Pansexual in Solo
The Star Wars universe has long been filled with characters who could possibly fall somewhere in the LGBTQ spectrum, but on screen? None of them have ever been confirmed. But with Solo: A Star Wars Story coming out next week on May 25, that could be a thing of the past.
The Huffington Post’s Bill Bradley asked Solo co-writer Jonathan Kasdan if Lando (Donald Glover) might be pansexual, to which he replied, “I would say yes.” Many Star Wars fanatics have presumed as much through pre-screenings and innuendos from the trailer, in which it seemed Lando might be flirting with young Hans Solo (Alden Ehrenreich). Though there have been other LGBT characters revealed off-screen through tie-in novels, no character has ever had the distinction in the films. Check out the trailer again and see what you think.
Kasdan’s co-writer and father Lawrence Kasdan (an Oscar winner who co-wrote The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens) suggests that defining Lando’s sexuality may not be so cut-and-dry. During the interview, Bradley brings up a comment L3-37 makes in the film about Lando flirting with Solo—and the older Kasdan plays it a little coy: “That is her personality. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn’t.” The inclusion of an LGBT character would be a step forward for a universe comprised of so many different kinds of life forms.
Glover picks up the role of Lando from Billy Dee Williams, who played the role in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. In the interview, Jonathan Kasdan goes on to say, “I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity―sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.”
So in typical Star Wars fashion, the writers have opted to go bigger: If you’re going to love men and women in the Star Wars universe, then you have to include droids in there, too.
