How a Twitter Spat with Kim Kardashian Rocked Kanye’s Chicago Non-Profit

If you’ve been on the internet recently, you may have noticed new Kanye drama afoot. Normally, such drama can be boiled down to a sentence or two, like “Kanye has a signed MAGA hat,” or, “Kanye thinks slavery was a choice.” But this latest incident features his wife Kim Kardashian, the rapper and philanthropist Rhymefest, and all of the youth of Chicago, so it might need a bit more explaining.

Frequent Kanye collaborator Rhymefest—who co-wrote “Jesus Walks”—founded with West the nonprofit Donda’s House. The Chicago-based youth arts organization is named named for Kanye’s late mother, Dr. Donda West. The group purchased Kanye’s childhood home, and are raising money to turn it into an arts center. But according to the organization, Kanye isn’t exactly being generous towards the foundation that bears his mom’s name.

In a Facebook post, Donda’s House wrote: “As we seek support to convert Kanye’s childhood home into a recording studio, museum and learning space – we have been unable to secure the financial support of Kanye despite multiple attempts, and despite those early conversations about his plan of support and advocacy for the youth in our programs.” Rhymefest followed up with a tweet:

@Drake when G.O.O.D. Music sends the money they owe you, will you please help us rebuild Kanye’s mothers house for the youth of Chicago. I spoke to Kanye about it. His response was “fuck the youth of Chicago”

(Rhymefest directed his request at Drake rather than an artist from Chicago in order to cleverly capitalize on existing Kanye-Drake beef.)

All this sparked a tweetstorm from Kim. Highlights included:

I saw you at our studio a few weeks ago so why didn’t you bring this up then @RHYMEFEST ? You were trying to get Kanye to listen to your sub par beats. You have the audacity to use Kanye’s mom name to try to shead a negative light on Kanye.

Sorry to all of my followers for flooding my timeline I know you have no idea who Rhymefest is.

In response, Rhymefest posted a written statement, before Donda’s House announced that it will be changing its name.

So there it is, the latest Kardashian-West dustup. It’s more complicated than its recent forebears, but it’s got one thing in common with them: It’s left people very unhappy with Kanye and Kim.

Girl. Bye. Rhymefest’s & his wife put in mad work across the city to help Donda’s House. Literally saw them in Walmart on 83rd buying supplies for the youth music program. Where have you been at the last 5 years? I’ll be quiet lol https://t.co/wqsZgYLIwu

Please tell me when @kimkardashian has been in the streets of Chicago helping young brothers and sisters like @rhymefest has been? If she has done it, drop the receipts. But he has put in the work. Slamming his credibility is pretty foul. https://t.co/nT6NAtIC7K
