Kanye West is bringing his usually invitation-only Sunday Service performance series to Coachella this Easter, and it will stream live to viewers around the world at 9am PT/12pm ET via the music festival’s YouTube channel.
West’s Sunday Service concerts are a private, star-studded affair that fans usually only glimpse on social media. West and wife Kim Kardashian began hosting the series of musical services in January, and they’re held at sometimes-secret locations in the LA area. Earlier in the year, shows took place indoors, with the performers bathed in James Turrell-esque light, but lately they have been outdoor affairs. Kanye performs both gospel songs and gospel version of his own hits alongside a monochrome-clad choir, but the proceedings aren’t a religious service. There are no sermons or Bible readings, just an hour of music. Celebrities including DMX, Courtney Love, Diplo, Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom, and regular Kanye collaborator Kid Cudi have all been in attendance.
Kanye was reportedly supposed to have a larger role at this year’s Coachella, but he allegedly dropped out of his headlining spot after the festival refused to build him a giant dome to perform in because it would have forced them to move the port-a-potties. It seems Kanye and Coachella negotiated this early-morning performance instead, which will be held on a hill on the festival grounds called “the mountain” rather than the main stage.
Despite the starry guest list, the biggest scene stealer at the performances has often been little North West, who’s one of the only attendees seemingly allowed to violate the monochrome dress code. Watch her adorably try to snatch the mic from her dad and get a few bars in on one Sunday’s rendition of West’s classic “Jesus Walks.”
