Henry Cavill Shaves his Mustache
My uncle once sat me down on his lap at a funeral and explained how life is like an episode of Touched by an Angel. I never watched it, but I got the larger point. Those most special to us are simply on loan: grandparents, family pets, Della Reese from Touched by an Angel. As all things beloved come into our lives, they are also destined to leave.
Today, Henry Cavill’s mustache joins that list.
Cavill’s mustache, which amassed a reputation all its own since he grew it out for a role in Mission Impossible: Fallout, had to be removed using CGI for his role in last fall’s Justice League. But now, with Fallout set to debut July 27 and filming presumably wrapped, the mustache is gone—raptured from the face of Superman himself.
“Don’t be alarmed, it’s me,” Cavill says in a video posted to Instagram, “Sometimes I even have trouble recognizing myself. It’s hard for me to admit. This is not CGI. He’s really gone. I can tell you this though, I will remember him, always.”
But for now, let’s remember the good times. Cavill memorialized his fallen flavor saver with a touching montage of selfies while a song plays. Which song? The only one that should be played during bittersweet moments—Sarah McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You.”
At the end of this trying year, we’ll look back on Cavill’s mustache with distinction (and the hashtag #ShavedButNotForgotten). As the old Russian proverb states: “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because people can finally see your face.”
