HBO Watchmen Series Details – HBO’s Watchmen Series Will Not Be an Adaptation of the Iconic Comic
When it comes to turning Alan Moore’s Watchmen into an HBO series, Damon Lindelof isn’t being hyperbolic when he compares it to adapting the Bible. Because that’s what Watchmen is to comic book fans—a work that’s not only considered one of the greatest superhero works of all time, but also one of the greatest graphic novels of all time.
In an honest open letter to fans, Lindelof, who’s currently working on producing HBO’s new Watchmen series, makes the case for the production’s artistic direction. Along with some touching personal anecdotes about what Watchmen means to him, Lindelof gave an update on what to expect from this upcoming series—namely that it will not be a straight adaptation:
“We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues [Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons] created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted …they will, however, be remixed. Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them … This new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates. It must ask new questions and explore the world through a fresh lens. Most importantly, it must be contemporary… The tone will be fresh and nasty and electric and absurd… Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising, yet familiar set of eyes… and it is here where we’ll be taking our greatest risk.”
This is an interesting take on the source material. Certainly, it will be very different from Zack Snyder’s mostly faithful 2009 movie. Instead, it sounds like this is a series that simply takes place within the Watchmen universe, and doesn’t necessarily focus on the same events of the comic. Considering DC’s history of adapting comics for the screen, fans have a right to be worried, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Lindelof.
