George and Amal Clooney Donating to March for Our Lives in Washington
On March 24, students from across the country will gather in Washington for the March for Our Lives, a movement to end gun violence and school shootings in the wake of the recent tragedy in Parkland, Florida. The march already has at least two high-profile supporters: George and Amal Clooney.
According to Variety, George said in a statement on Tuesday that they will not only donate money, but also attend the demonstration to “stand side by side” with the students:
“Amal and I are so inspired by the courage and eloquence of these young men and women from Stoneman Douglas High School. Our family will be there on March 24 to stand side by side with this incredible generation of young people from all over the country, and in the name of our children Ella and Alexander, we’re donating $500,000 to help pay for this groundbreaking event. Our children’s lives depend on it.”
The Clooneys have a tradition of supporting causes they believe in. Through their Clooney Foundation for Justice, they have partnered with groups like UNICEF and the Southern Poverty Law Center (to which they donated $1 million to fight hate groups after the Charlottesville white supremacist rally in August 2017). They’re also sponsoring an Iraqi refugee attending the University of Chicago and are pledging $20 million for refugee housing and education.
The March for Our Lives is being organized by students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a school shooting on Wednesday left 17 people dead.
“March For Our Lives is created by, inspired by, and led by students across the country who will no longer risk their lives waiting for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass school shootings that has become all too familiar,” their mission statement reads. “Change is coming. And it starts now, inspired by and led by the kids who are our hope for the future.”
