Fox News Is Already Making Excuses For Roseanne’s Racist Tweet
Roseanne Barr’s show was swiftly canceled by ABC today after her racist tweet about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett drew near universal backlash. Along with getting her show canceled, Barr was also dropped by ICM Partners, which had represented her.
But, not everyone has been critical of Roseanne’s blatantly racist tweet. The folks over at Fox News are attempting to make excuses for Roseanne comparing Jarrett to apes.
During a panel hosted by Harris Faulkner, Republican strategist Noelle Nikpour attempted to reframe the racist tweet:
“We live in a politically correct world right now …We live in a world where it’s just not plain not nice… to say … Let’s look at what this was and what she said …The tweet was not nice. It was ugly. It was demeaning. It was gross. And let’s just leave it at that.”
Yes, it is those things, but it is also racist—a word Nikpour refused to use. If that wasn’t bad enough, Faulkner interjected that this somehow is an issue of free speech.
“I don’t understand it to be anything other than free speech,” Faulkner said. “It is extremely offensive but it is just that. So she says in one of her tweets, there were three rapid fire today, it was a joke. It was a miscalculated joke.”
“And she is a comedian. She has a wicked, twisted sense of humor,” Nikpour added. “Everybody knows her to be a little raunchy, a little rough…. She knows what she is doing.”
This is absolutely not an issue of free speech. Barr’s comment was racist, and as such, her employer fired her for being racist. This is not an issue of censorship or silencing opinions—this is someone being rebuked for being a racist, which is something this country seems hesitant to do. There is no excuse for what Roseanne said, and all of this fallout from it is exactly what she deserves.
