Emilia Clarke Hints That Her Secret Invasion Character Is Spider-Woman In a New Interview

If you’re a working actor in Hollywood today, are you really doing it right if your first and last name hasn’t appeared in the end credits of a Marvel film? Sure, it’s OK if you have a Martin Scorsese-esque aversion to the superhero game. But it must feel like you’re missing out if you haven’t gone for a trip to Feige’s superhero world.

Take the casting news for Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, which seemed to include everyone who hasn’t been in the MCU yet—that we’ve been dying to see in the MCU—mainly Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and of course, Emilia Clarke. It’s a return to familiar territory for the actress, having already starred in the other big-budget, culture-swallowing franchise: Game of Thrones. Now, in an interview with Comic Book about her forthcoming Image Comics miniseries M.O.M.: Mother of Madness, Clarke revealed the reason why she joined Secret Invasion—which Marvel is hyping as its next event series.

“I just think what they’re doing right now is so exciting and so cool, and so on the cutting edge of it. I feel like they’re like the Apple of this world,” Clarke said. “To be part of that family feels like, Oh my god, I’m in the cool kid crowd. That’s so cool. Honestly speaking, the people that are making this are what pushed me over the line to really wanting to do it. I just think that everyone’s heart and heads are in the right place with this one.”

Secret Invasion will catch up with the shape-shifting Skrulls, who were introduced in Captain Marvel. (Meaning that Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn will return to the action, too.) In a famous Marvel comic book event, also titled Secret Invasion, some not-so-good Skrulls hide out on Earth under different aliases, so they can stir up trouble and even pose as certain superheroes. But where does that leave Clarke, whose role we don’t know yet? Well, check out what she said in the rest of the interview regarding her history with comic books.

“I grew up reading fantasy fiction, so I know that’s not the same as the actual comic book itself, but that was where my imagination lived,” Clarke revealed. “And so, then reading about superheroes for the first time, I’m pretty sure it was Superman that was my first ever. And Spider-Man, I kind of thought he was pretty cool. Spider-Man was the first origin story that I remember as a child reading and being like, Oh wow, this is more than what’s on the page. This is a bigger world,’ and then being allowed into that.”

Don’t take this as a major hint, but fans have been speculating that Clarke will play none other than Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman. In the comics, Drew is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent—and the Skrulls decide to briefly take her identity. The other popular theory is that Clarke will play Secret Invasion’s potential big bad: the Skrull princess Veranke. If we’re being honest, though, we’d love to see Clarke as Spider-Woman. Especially if Olivia Wilde ends up directing it.
