Elton John Royal Wedding Performance

Following months of speculation about whether Elton John would play at the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Buckingham Palace confirmed on Saturday that Sir Elton did, indeed, perform at the lunchtime reception.

“Prince Harry asked Sir Elton to perform at the reception,” the Palace said in a statement. “Sir Elton performed for the newly married couple in recognition of the close connection he has with Prince Harry and his family.”

John had rescheduled a few shows this month to free himself up for the date of the Royal Wedding, and he’s been a longtime friend of the family. He was close with Princess Diana, working with her to raise money for AIDS research and awareness. He also played “Candle in the Wind” at her funeral 21 years ago.

Because of his closeness with their mother, John has said in interviews that Harry and William are, “very special to me because of their mother.”

“She was just loved by people because she had that great ability—which her son, Prince Harry, has inherited—where she could walk into a room of people and make them feel at ease, as if she’d know them all her life,” John said. “[She] “would be proud of her boys.”

This is also a huge year for Elton John fans, as the singer has embarked on his last-ever tour. But it’s unlikely they’ll get to see it, unless the Palace decides to release footage or audio, because the private event was not televised and neither cameras nor iPhones were allowed in.
