Dolly Parton Sia Here I Am Duet
Coming in with the collaboration you didn’t know you needed this week is Dolly Parton and Sia. That’s correct: Dolly Parton and Sia. The single, a re-recording of Parton’s 1971 single “Here I Am,” is one of several singles Parton will be including on the Dumplin’ soundtrack ahead of the film’s release, and we have notes. Go ahead and listen.
The short of it is that at 72, Parton still has an insane voice. That’s not particularly news, but with a dearth of vocally demanding material from Parton in recent years, her voice hasn’t been on full display. But if this single is any indication, the Dumplin’ soundtrack (composed by Parton and Grammy-nominee Linda Perry) is going to be a must-listen. I mean, Dolly and Sia have a belt-off in this year of our lord, 2018. Don’t we need it?
The single gets a rockabilly makeover, with a more pronounced electric guitar—but what really drives it home is Sia’s signature vocal style and Parton’s matured voice on a single she recorded at the start of her career. Sia is just one on a list of collaborators that includes Miranda Lambert and Mavis Staples.
The film, recently acquired by Netflix, follows a plus-size beauty queen who uses Parton’s songbook as motivation to flip the pageant system on its head. Jennifer Aniston, who stars as the former-pageant-queen-mother, will be offering her vocals as well.
