Dave Grohl’s New Solo Project Is For Anyone Who Can’t Get Enough Dave Grohl
Hey, do you like Dave Grohl? Is Dave Grohl of Nirvana, of Foo Fighters, of Them Crooked Vultures not enough for you? Is Dave Grohl the actor, the documentarian, the producer, the self-described Mayor of Rock Town, just not quite cutting it? Then allow me to introduce Dave Grohl’s new project, Play, a documentary by Dave Grohl, which follows Dave Grohl playing a 23-minute Dave Grohl song with Dave Grohl playing on seven different instruments.
It’s a project designed to demonstrate “the rewards and challenges of dedicating ones life to playing and mastering a musical instrument.”
“Watching my kids start to play music and learn to sing or play drums, it brings me back to the time when I was their age listening to albums, learning from listening… and when I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out,” Grohl said in a statement. “And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”
The documentary, which arrives Aug. 10, will follow Grohl as he preps for the recording of the new song that is performed in the second part.
This type of solo music making is nothing new for Grohl; he recorded the entire debut Foo Fighters studio album on his own. He actually chose the name Foo Fighters to distance himself from the project, but when it got the attention of record executives he put together a band to perform the music live.
