Carrie Fisher Wrote Some of Her Best ‘Last Jedi’ Lines
One of the less well-known aspects of Carrie Fisher’s wide-ranging career are the years she spent as one of Hollywood’s top script doctors, polishing and punching up the work of other screenwriters. So it’s no surprise that Fisher herself wrote some of Princess Leia’s most memorable lines in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. (This is your warning to duck out spoiler-free if you haven’t seen the movie yet.)
In an interview with People, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson revealed that Fisher played a big role in writing her own scenes:
Director Rian Johnson, 44, told PEOPLE Fisher came up with many of her character’s scenes, including a funny moment in which she reunites with Mark Hamill‘s Luke Skywalker and points out that she changed her hairstyle. “That was her,” Johnson said. “That was a Carrie Fisher line. Of course it was.”
That wasn’t the only line in the script that the talented screenwriter and author created. She also tackled a scene with Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern) in which Leia says, “You go, I’ve said it enough,” in reference to the much loved saying, “May The Force Be With You.”
The director also told People that “every single part” of Fisher’s performance is invested with her ideas for the role.
Fisher died of cardiac arrest last year, shortly after completing filming for The Last Jedi. The film was dedicated to her memory.
