Bill Cosby Sentenced to 3 to 10 Years in Prison
Bill Cosby has been sentenced to 3 to 10 years in state prison and has been ruled a sexually violent predator by a Pennsylvania judge. The classification as a sexually violent predator means Cosby is required to register as a sex offender and undergo counseling for the rest of his life. Judge Steven O’Neill also sentenced Cosby to “total confinement.”
“It is time for justice, Mr. Cosby, this has all circled back to you,” Judge O’Neill said. “The day has come. The time has come.”
He had faced up to 30 years in prison, but prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to merge three counts of his conviction into one, dropping it down to a max of 10 years. In April, the 81-year-old actor was convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault against basketball player Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia mansion in 2004. Constand was the only woman among dozens of accusers to bring criminal charges against Cosby.
Nine of Cosby’s accusers, including Constand, were present for the sentencing. Cosby’s wife Camille was not in attendance on Tuesday.
Bill Cosby has been sentenced to 3-10 years in prison.
“Equal justice under the law” means Cosby should not be sentenced differently based on “who he is or who he was,” the judge said.

On Monday, prosecutors asked a judge to give the comedian five to 10 years in jail. His lawyers asked for house arrest, saying the legally-blind actor was too frail to be in prison. A psychologist also testified that Cosby deserved to be categorized as a “sexually violent predator” because he had a personality disorder that compelled him to have sex with non-consenting partners.
