‘Barbarians’ Season 2 Trailer, News, Details, Cast, Air Date
For those of you still—still!—grumbling about the Game of Thrones finale, allow us to introduce you to a possible antidote to whatever hole Benioff and Weiss left in your heart: Barbarians.
Barbarians, a German historical drama that debuted on Netlflix last week, is a little different than Thrones, though. Yeah, the blood, sex, and tears are there. (The dragons most certainly are not.) But like History Channel’s Vikings, Barbarians is grounded in true historical events. Mainly, the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. The battle, which went down in 9 A.D. was a significant—and still, oft-cited—event in German history. As is depicted in the Netflix show, a Germanic alliance managed to take down three Roman Legions. Still up in the air is how much of that Folkwin/Thusnelda romance happened behind the scenes, though.
Of course, as with pretty much any Netflix series that cracks the service’s hallowed Top 10 list nowadays, newfound historians of first-century Germany are wondering if they’ll see Barbarians follow up with its main players after the Battle of Teutoburg Forest. And if we see a Season Two, where, exactly, in history the show would hone in on? Here’s everything we know about the future of Barbarians so far.

Will Barbarians return for Season Two?
You might have to hold off on your chest-thumping, fireside party/ceremony/Germanic rave for now. Barbarians just came into the world on October 23, 2020, so Netflix (typically one to announce next-season plans a couple months after a premiere) hasn’t made any Season Two announcements yet. But don’t lose hope, young warrior. Barbarians has been a fixture in Netflix’s Top 10 list in late October, so the series seems like a shoo-in for a Season Two order.
What will Season Two of Barbarians be about?
We don’t blame you if you’re still coming down from that finale. The Roman Empire got its ass beat at the hands of Arminius, Thusnelda, and the Germanic tribes. But… you know this is the Roman Empire, right? Which lasted nearly 1500 years after the events Barbarians are based on. So, like we said—even though Barbarians is dialed up with Netflix-ready relationship dramatics, you just have to look to your nearest history textbook for a hint at what’s to come.

Let’s start with those pesky Romans, then, shall we? You can bet they’ll restore their ranks and ambush the Germanic alliance right back. In the years following the Battle of Teutoburg Forest, the second Roman emperor, Tiberius, took power. As you can imagine, he replenished the legions quickly—but surprisingly he took a defensive approach. He chose to safeguard his land instead. Although, Germanicus, a Roman commander, marched into Germania and attacked several tribes, which is a conflict you could see Barbarians portraying on-screen. If Barbarians goes to that era in Season Two, expect Armenius and Thusnelda to be at the front of the defense. As for Folkwin? Honestly, it’s hard to tell—maybe he’ll go after Armius as he climbs the tribe’s ranks.
Hey, there’s even potential that Barbarians goes even further off-script. When talking about Barbarians Arne Nolting—a writer and showrunner for the show—said, “It’s not a history lesson… We’re making entertainment.” So let your imagination run wild while we wait for more news from Netflix’s end. We might even see that dragon after all.
