Baby Yoda Called Out Baby Groot on Saturday Night Live
Few merchandising maneuvers have ever stolen the nation’s heart quite the way Baby Yoda has. The little green alien is irresistibly adorable, from the tips of his tripod fingers to top of his tiny, fuzzy head. So of course Saturday Night Live featured a take on the puppet in last night’s episode.
Kyle Mooney got greened up for the Weekend Update deskside bit, and chatted with co-anchor Michael Che about his newfound stardom. “I been blessed,” he said humbly. “I been blessed. People have been liking the show. All the memes, and the fans, some sliding in the DMs a little bit. You know, not saying nothing, but it’s been very… beneficial. Let’s just leave it at that.”
Baby Yoda also told Che that he’s rolling with a Pussy Posse-esque squad of superstars that includes Timothée Chalamet, Robert Pattinson, and those two dudes from the Sonic commercials. And like any young star who’s just had his big break, Baby Yoda is apparently already working on some new projects, including a line of three-fingered gloves called Hand-Dalorians, a Reebok deal, a mixtape, and a Netflix stand-up special. (Disney+ would likely have a problem with that last one.)
But it’s not all good news for the newly-minted celebrity—he has his haters, too. Apparently, competition between Disney-owned baby aliens is fierce, and Mooney’s Baby Yoda called out a rival live on TV.
“Baby Groot,” said Mooney. “Do me a favor and keep my name out your little tree mouth before I snap you like a twig.”
