‘Away’ Season 2 Release Date, Cast, Plot
Throughout the entire nail-biting first season of Netflix’s Away, I kept thinking to myself, “If this show ends without telling us whether or not Hilary Swank safely landed on Mars, I’m going to blast someone out of the airlock.” Fortunately for all of us dreading a cliffhanger ending, Swank’s Commander Emma Green and her cohort of intrepid astronauts made it to the Red Planet safe and sound, but Netflix may have done us even dirtier with an ending that begs a different question: now what?
We left the crew of the Atlas just moments after they touched down on Mars, with the entirety of their 18-month stay on the Red Planet stretching out before them. A lot could go right–or wrong–in those 18 months, but we’ll have to wait for another season to find out. Here’s everything we know thus far about a potential season two.
Is Netflix Renewing Away For Season Two?
The short answer: no official word yet, but all signs point to yes. Since it landed on Netflix on September 4th, Away has rocketed into Netflix’s top ten lineup, even earning the coveted “#1 on Netflix” spot. The show’s immediate popularity suggests a speedy renewal, but official word has yet to come down from Netflix.
Andrew Hinderaker, Away’s creator, has no official news to share, but he sounded off about his ambitions for the future of the show, saying:
There’s no news to break in terms of whether we know that there will be future seasons, but the plan was always for a multi-season arc. The intention was always to start the first season and end the first season exactly how we did. But part of the reason the show is called Away is we were always interested in that journey, and what happens when they go home. There’s this phenomenon among astronauts, it’s so fascinating, where home becomes space, and they feel away back home. And, of course, that’s amplified in a mission to Mars where you’ve been gone for three years. You literally are different people when you come back.If Away Is Renewed, When Will Season Two Hit Netflix?
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to throw a wrench into the film and television production process, it’s difficult to predict when anything will hit Netflix. Yet Decider has given it a go, connecting the dots from the first season’s production process to the hypothetical production of a second season. The first season of Away was in production from August 2019 to February 2020, meaning that Netflix needed a full year from when cameras began rolling to bring the show to television. By that logic, fall 2021 is the earliest we could see Away Season Two.

Away reportedly cost Netflix over $6 million per episode, making it one of the most expensive Netflix shows of all time. Certainly those big-budget special efforts (fireball in space, anyone?) take time and money to produce, yet according to showrunner Jessica Goldberg, season two will be worth the price tag–and the wait.
What Will Away Season Two Be About?
Despite the lack of an official renewal, Goldberg already has some big ideas for what comes next–but don’t get your hopes up about little green men. After all, Away is a deeply humanist show about personal sacrifice and the universal ties that bind us across cultures–not a sci-fi fantasy. When asked if a potential season two would include life on Mars, Goldberg said yes, but with a caveat.
“When I say life, I mean like a microorganism,” Goldberg said. “I don’t mean an alien. The show would never go in that direction.”
Season One is heavily steeped in ideas about globalism and international collaboration, with the world’s five leading space agencies teaming up and pooling their considerable resources to ferry their finest astronauts and scientists to Mars. There’s little discussion of private sector space exploration, which dominates much of our conversation about sending mankind into space, yet Goldberg teases that this could change in Season Two, with fictionalized approximations of Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin coming into view.
“I do feel that’s a story that’s super important,” Goldberg said, “Right now, we can’t get anywhere without that private sector money, and I think it would be great to bring that storyline in.” She added that private sector space exploration was an idea that the Away writers discussed “a lot,” and that, should they return for Season Two, “that would be part of what we continue to explore.”
Yet as thrilling as Away’s consideration of big picture questions about space exploration may be, the show is also, at its heart, an exploration of the small picture: how one family stays connected across millions of miles. Season One left viewers hanging on a number of interpersonal cliffhangers, from Melissa’s unanswered declaration of love for Matt to Emma’s fraying connection to her family.
“Somehow, that family managed to stay very tethered to each other in the first season, but this is fourteen months on Mars and then eight months back,” Goldberg said. “So just all those questions seem so exciting. It feels like there’s a great season two.”
Whether you’re looking forward to more chemical fireballs in space or dying to know what happens with Matt and Melissa, it sounds like season two will have something for everyone. All that’s left is for Netflix to get on board. Watch this space for updates as we continue to learn more.
