Atlanta Season 3 Premiere Date, News, Cast, Plot Details, and Spoilers
Donald Glover and FX’s Atlanta has been off the air for a minute. After the critically acclaimed second season ended back in 2018, the comedy series went on to be nominated for 16 Primetime Emmy Awards. Unfortunately, after that last season, the launch of Season Three has been in flux for a bit. Fear not though. FX isn’t about to let a critically acclaimed show like Atlanta fade into the night—the stories of Earn, Paper Boi, Darius, and Van aren’t over yet. The bad news is: The wait is just beginning for Season Three.
When Season Two left off, Earn and Van discovered that Lottie is gifted and should be in a school for advanced learning. Alfred and Darius head off for a European tour, and in the final bit of the episode, Earn implicates Clark by sliding a gun in his carry on before going through security, so yeah… there are some ramifications to address in Season Three. And from the sounds of it, this upcoming season is going to be fully international. But first, there has to be a Season Three. Here’s what we know about the FX comedy’s big (eventual) return.
When is Atlanta coming back?
There is both good news and bad news to report here. At the Television Critics Association winter press tour in early January, FX President John Landgraf told reporters that the upcoming season of the FX comedy likely won’t be coming out until 2021. The good news that comes with that though is that the third season, originally slated to be eight episodes, has been upped to 10 according to Entertainment Weekly. On top of that, Season Four is being shot at the same time, meaning that after we get through Season Three in early 2021, a soon-to-follow Season Four is likely right behind.
Do we know when the plot of Atlanta will pick up?
This is a bit more speculative, but some context clues give some insight. Also at the TCA press tour, Landgraf revealed that much of the third season will be shot outside of the U.S. meaning it seems like we’ll get to see some of that the tour that Paper Boi (Brian Tyree Henry) was invited on.
It’s unclear whether or not that the European tour will be the sole focus of Season Three, but it was reported at the event that a significant amount of the season will be shot there. As for what could follow Season Four? Landgraf said, “As long as Donald wants to make more Atlanta, I’m down for that. But it’s his choice.”
