30 Best Thanksgiving Songs – Thanksgiving Playlist to Celebrate the Holiday
Like any holiday, Thanksgiving has its pros and cons. The cons mostly have to due with the holiday’s origins, which are often softened or fabricated in modern textbooks and storytelling. Really, it was about a group of religious fanatics who escaped to America where they intended to set up a theocracy in a fertile piece of land that was left uninhabited after the natives had been wiped out by plagues.
The story we tell today is all well and good: that the Pilgrims put aside their differences with the local natives and had a feast celebrating the successful harvest. This is a nice story, if not entirely true, that at least promotes tolerance, acceptance, and other such values that we need reminding of—especially in 2018.
But, in terms of our modern celebration of the holiday it can’t be beat. It’s always on a Thursday—meaning you’re always guaranteed a four-day weekend. There’s no stress or requirement to give gifts on Thanksgiving. Actually, in most cases you pretty much just get at least one free meal, plus leftovers. Mostly, it’s an excuse to watch sports (if that’s your thing), get drunk (if that’s your thing), overeat (if that’s your thing), and fall asleep at 6 p.m. (if that’s your thing). It’s the American dream!
Yes, the day after Thanksgiving is a nightmare of consumerism that causes people to trample each other at malls, get in fights over Starbucks cups, or put up stupid decorations that we have to stare at until late January. But Black Friday is Christmas’s problem.
In fact, Thanksgiving is at least in the top-three holidays (along with New Year’s Eve and Halloween) based solely on how enjoyable they are in practice. And it’s a damn shame there aren’t more songs about it. Here are 24 songs to celebrate one of the greatest days of the year.
