Canadian competitive eater and youtuber Furious Pete was diagnosed with testicular cancer last year. But thankfully, doctors caught it early, treated it quickly, and it was believed to have been in remission.
However, in his latest YouTube video, Pete shared the heartbreaking news that his cancer has not only returned, but it will also need a much more intense level of treatment this time around.
“When I first had testicular cancer at the end of September, I had my left testicle removed. Initially, there were concerns that some cancer particles [traveled] to my lymph nodes,” Pete explained. In response, doctors ordered a strict regimen of regular blood tests and scans to make sure they catch those ‘cancer particles’ as early as possible if they start growing anywhere else in his body. And unfortunately, it seems they have.
“After seeing the CT scan, they discovered my lymph nodes had grown to the point where I would be classified as stage 2 with testicular cancer,” Pete said. In his case, the cancer started in one of his testicles before spreading to a nearby lymph node; which the body’s immune system uses to help fight infection. The lymph nodes all over the body are connected by a network of lymphatic vessels, which makes treatment of cancers like this slightly more difficult.
Instead of just removing the cancer with surgery, he will now require radiation therapy, and perhaps chemotherapy as well in the future.
This is incredibly sad news, but Pete is handling it with incredible dignity. Despite being in a self-proclaimed “bad shape” mentally, he still plans to take his audience along as he undergoes treatment and answer any questions they might have.
This is especially important as testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men between the ages of 15-35, and Pete’s audience is primarily made up of young men who have the highest risk of being affected by the condition in the future.
Pete’s first video on cancer from 2014:
Furious Pete, real name Peter Czerwinski, is a vlogger, body builder, and competitive eater. He is best know for his incredible eating challenges, which make up many of his most popular videos on YouTube. He also traveled the world for a German television series called Furious World Tour; which is kind of like Man vs. Food on steroids. Through is work on the show, and on YouTube, he holds a huge number of Guinness World Records; including the records for most hamburgers eaten in one minute, fastest time to eat a bowl of pasta, and fastest time to eat a 12 inch pizza.
It’s clear from his videos that he is incredibly strong in mind, body, and spirit. So, we look forward to seeing him tackle many more challenges once he’s kicked cancer’s ass.
Editor’s Note: While testicular cancer is relatively rare, with only 20,000 cases in the U.S. every year, it is still the most common cancer in men between the ages of 15-35. If you are in or near that age range it is important that you know how to check for this condition. Check out the video below to learn how to check for testicular cancer (NSFW):
